During the sell-out Summit of the 2022 Hydrogen Americas Summit, we spoke to global and regional #hydrogen and #energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry. Including an interview with Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines & Low Carbon Innovation from the Government of British Columbia.
What message did you share with the audience?
I think what we’re trying to draw to people’s attention is that British Columbia’s already deeply involved in the hydrogen economy on the research side, our universities – the University of British Columbia, some of the leading companies such as Ballard have been in British Columbia and work there since the 1990s. Yet we have building on that very solid base, we have the opportunity to become a leading hydrogen economy globally, and that’s our aspiration.
Why is British Columbia described as the Silicon Valley of hydrogen?
Well that was a comment by Andrea Engelen who’s the CEO of Cell Centric which is a partnership of a global Daimler and Volvo, and I asked her why are you locating, in addition to Germany, in a Vancouver suburb Burnaby, and she said “we have to be here, British Columbia is the Silicon Valley of the hydrogen fuel cell so it’s absolutely imperative that we’re here.“
What role should Government take in the hydrogen revolution?
Well I think there are number of things that Governments can do, one is to establish clear policy, second is to build a very simple and transparent regulatory system, I think the challenge certainly in many jurisdictions will be to draw all the strands of approval, environmental and others together. That’s what we’ve done in British Columbia, a single window where a perspective investor will be able to come and have their questions answered, and get their approvals and ensure order.
Why is this summit important?
Well a conference like this is really an opportunity to meet directly in person with global leaders in the hydrogen economy and that’s very much what I was looking forward to and, I think this conference really has delivered, I’ve been able to talk to people that I wouldn’t ordinarily be able to talk to and it’s inspiring I think it’s also a good way for people to learn about British Columbia as well.
