During the sell-out Summit of the 2022 Hydrogen Americas Summit, we spoke to global and regional #hydrogen and #energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry, including an interview with Lori Cobos, Commissioner, Public Utility Commission of Texas.
What message did you share with the audience?
Well I’m here to represent the state of Texas and the message I have on behalf of Texas is that we have the hydrogen resources, the pipeline and storage infrastructure, the work force and the export capability to be a national and global leader in hydrogen.
What new insights have you gained at the summit?
What I’ve learned at this event is that there is a lot of national and global interest in hydrogen, and that’s by way of companies of all types in chemical, oil and gas, investors, and I think that’s a really great sign of potential scaling of this resource. And I’ve learned a lot about the different innovation that’s being on done on different types of hydrogen from clean hydrogen that is extracted from solar and wind generation to the potential capabilities of utilizing hydrogen and gas with gas and nuclear generation.
What opportunities does hydrogen provide for your state?
Absolutely, I think it is an opportunity for our state as we look to plan for the future and ensure that our state has a reliable, resilient and portable supply of power. With the amount of renewables that we have in our system as I described earlier, we have over 46 gigawatts of wind and solar in our system, we have a growing population and economy, and we have to make sure that we continue to have that reliable, resilient, affordable supply of power. And new technologies like hydrogen can help us as we move towards the future to incorporate them as they become more cost-effective with our dispatchable thermal generation fleet, gas and nuclear and leverage our existing high penetration renewable generations for clean hydrogen.
