It does not make commercial sense to build green hydrogen projects in the US that are powered solely by solar energy or wind power — facilities will need a combination of the two, according to the hydrogen boss of German utility RWE’s US renewables unit.

Laura Bergedieck, senior vice-president of hydrogen development at RWE Clean Energy told last week’s Hydrogen Americas Summit in Washington DC that it was vital to combine both solar and wind power at the same green H2 projects in order to keep electrolysers working for as many hours a day as possible.
