While emissions worldwide from factories, airplanes and cars dipped sharply last year due to pandemic-related lockdowns, coming back to business as usual disregards the agreed temperature limits. The new American administration seeks an accountable, transparent pathway to reduce emissions in the prospect of having a net zero economy by 2050 and acknowledges the dramatic consequences of failing this task. Similarly, Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy is targeting the same result and positions the country as a world-leading producer, user and exporter of clean hydrogen, and associated technologies. To avoid worsening heatwaves, flooding, storms and societal unrest, the US plans investments, policies and research that will in effect not only decarbonise particular industries but the whole economy in a narrowing window of time. A decisive American policy action to reduce emissions is a significant and much-needed signal of solidarity and a great enabler of change. In the words of John Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate:
“The goal is to get the job done at climate, step up and work with other countries to reach net zero by 2050 or better, or sooner.”
