During the sell-out Summit of the 2022 Hydrogen Americas Summit, we spoke to global and regional #hydrogen and #energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry, including an interview with Jigar Shah, Director, Loan Programs Office, U.S. Department of Energy.
What message did you share with the audience?
I mean in general I think the question really becomes what are the banks doing now? Are they ready to go? And if they’re not, what role does the loan programs office play in making sure that we get money into these projects.
What role does green hydrogen play in climate change?
Well look I think that we need a lot of tools to be able to solve climate change, hydrogen is a really important tool in the tool box because there’s a lot of hard to decarbonize sectors like steel, cement, industrial processes and hydrogen becomes a very key way to do that. We’ve also long haul transport and other areas where a liquid fuel might be critical, whether it’s methanol or whether it’s other types of fuels. And so hydrogen is a core product to all of those solutions, and so figuring out how we get to clean hydrogen is a key part of making sure we have a full suite of tools to solve climate change.
Why is this summit important?
Well, there’s just so much that has changed right? I mean, a year ago thought that hydrogen really wasn’t going to work financially, then you have the Ukraine conflict for leisure prices have gone up, natural gas prices have gone up, but also you have the Inflation Reduction Act that has passed, and a lot of people are seeking information, and trying to level set, where are we? Where’s the market? What do the banks think? What do the developers think? And this is a great event to make sure we level set the information for everybody.
