During America’s leading hydrogen event #H2Americas2024 Summit & Exhibition, we spoke to global and regional #hydrogen and #energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry, including an interview with Steven Parente, Hydrogen Infrastructure & Integration Specialist, Caterpillar.
“I’m Steven Parente, Hydrogen Infrastructure and Integration Specialist at Caterpillar, and a big part of my role is looking at market opportunity and strategy around hydrogen and fuel cell, products and services, and how we can really walk the journey of the energy transition with our customers and help them find the solutions that meet their needs and their goals.
My main objective at this conference is to help educate the industry and help people know that Caterpillar has solutions to meet their needs in a reduced carbon future, so a lot of people are familiar with Caterpillar from construction equipment and mining machines, but their not as familiar with what we’re doing with some of these next generation and alternative fuels technologies. And so a lot of my objective here is really to help get the word out that we are investing and learning and developing fuel cell products and solutions, we have also our traditional engine business and we have a gas engine that can run on up to 100% hydrogen and produce power from that, and so just making people aware that Caterpillar is a partner that they can trust whatever their objectives are for their company.
A great conference for connecting with people along the hydrogen value chain and people in different parts of their journey, both on very ceasing companies certainly on the production and supply side and then also some of the end users that are trying to wrap their mind around hydrogen and understand the technology, understand some of the challenges, so a wide variety of people that are attending. It’s been great for making new connections and having those kind of discussions.
Caterpillar has the capability to generate power from hydrogen. We have a reciprocating engine generator set that can produce power from 100% hydrogen, we had a fuel cell demonstration that we recently concluded a few months back, where we demonstrated a one a half megawatt fuel cell system at a data center in Wyoming, and so that really showcased our capability for a full system solution, we had not only the fuel cell but as part of that we had CAT battery energy storage modules, we had also a CAT microgrid controller that’s helping make sure that whole system functions properly and safely, and with that system we were able to supply back up power to the data center for a continuous 48 hours, and meet the transient load requirements of the data center. So it was really a great demonstration and showcase of our competency and capabilities.
It’s attracting a large number of people, you come to this conference and you’re able to meet a lot of people and a lot of companies throughout the value chain all at once. So there’s a nice variety of the sessions in terms of discussion about policy, discussion about different technologies, discussion about both producing OEMs and uses. So nice variety there and the of course the networking opportunity is excellent, there’s large number of people from different experiences, different industries, and so it’s a really great value in that respect.”
