Rebecca Knights is Executive Director, Strategic Policy and Delivery with the Department for Energy and Mining (DEM), Government of South Australia.
Rebecca has more than 20 years commercial, regulatory and policy experience across the energy industry, and in government and statutory businesses.
At DEM, Rebecca is responsible for providing high level leadership on energy and resource strategic policy, industry development and project implementation to support sustainable benefits and prosperity to South Australians, while unlocking the state’s resources.
Her team leads efforts to make South Australia an attractive place to invest in renewable energy, leveraging the urgent global imperative to decarbonise. It’s also charged with guiding the clean energy transition to protect the social, economic, and environmental needs of the state, while respecting Native Title, and ensuring that Aboriginal communities’ benefit from this growing industry.
The world-first Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act (the Act), developed under Rebecca’s watch, is imbued with the principles of social licence and community participation, recognising the state’s ambition that all South Australians benefit from a strong economy. The Act is pivotal in the government’s State Prosperity Project, a coordinated initiative to unlock the full potential of South Australia’s renewable energy, critical minerals, and green manufacturing to reindustrialise the state and deliver a new era of prosperity.
